What is AVI

The Italian Video and Media Libraries Association (AVI) is a non-profit cultural organisation committed to promoting and developing video and media libraries and archives in Italy. The association’s main aim is to support the creation of innovative services for the general public, while ensuring the safeguarding and promotion of this audiovisual legacy.

AVI was established as an association in Cesena on 24 October 2001, and ever since has represented the sector in cultural, scientific, technical, legal and legislative contexts as concerns the organisation of services and documentation in video and media archives.

In the decades since it was founded, AVI has successfully promoted the important role of Italian audiovisual archives in promoting and educating people about our film and audiovisual culture.

We have provided support and assistance, both in person and remotely, to public and private organisations belonging to AVI. This work has included workshops, meetings and teaching events focusing on preservation, access to our audiovisual heritage and in particular copyright, an issue that has been the subject of updates and changes, mainly since 2016 with the European Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market.
